Succession Certificate

Getting a Succession Certificate or Letter of Administration in Pakistan (Simpler Process!)

This information explains how to obtain legal documents in Pakistan that verify who inherits a deceased person's assets. These documents are:

  • Succession Certificate: For movable assets (like bank accounts, cars)
  • Letter of Administration: For immovable assets (like land, houses)

What's Changed?

Previously, getting these documents involved a lengthy court process. Now, the National Database Registration Authority (NADRA) offers a faster, five-step process through their Succession Facilitation Units.

Who Can Apply?

Legal heirs of the deceased person can apply. This typically includes spouses and children.

How to Apply (Depends on Location):

  • Sindh Province: You can apply through an attorney in Pakistan.
  • Islamabad, Punjab & Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK): At least one legal heir must visit a designated NADRA center in person to initiate the application.

The Process (5 Steps):

  1. Application Start: Provide your ID, the deceased's ID and death certificate, and a letter of authorization from all legal heirs (except Sindh).
  2. Heir & Asset Details: Share information about legal heirs and the deceased's assets (movable and immovable).
  3. Verification & Consent: All legal heirs visit a NADRA center for fingerprint verification (biometrics).
  4. Public Notice: NADRA publishes a notice to check for any objections to the application.
  5. Certificate Issuance: If no objections arise within 14 days, the certificate is printed and given to the applicant.

Important Notes:

  • Find a complete list of required documents and region-specific details on the NADRA website: https://succession.nadra.gov.pk/
  • The Pakistan Consulate General in Houston charges a $60 fee (debit/credit card only).
  • Track your application status online or by text message (if applying from Pakistan).
